Samsung Electronics C., Ltd., has partnered with Chinese electronics company Xiaomi Corporation to present ISOCELL Bright HMX, the world’s first mobile image sensor higher than 100 million pixels.

“Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor,” said Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi. “We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones.”

The ISOCELL Bright HMX’s unique features allow it to produce astoundingly detailed photos in both high and low-light settings. It has a 1/1.33-inch size mobile image sensor that helps it take in more light, even in low-light settings. That’s almost three times as large as the 1./2.5” sensors found in most mobile phones. In high-light settings, the Smart-ISO responds by opting for low ISO to optimize pixel saturation. The ISOCELL Bright HMX is also great for filming—it can record at resolutions of up to 6k at 30 fps.

“Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics.

For convenience and sometimes bragging rights, more and more creatives are opting to use mobile technology for personal and professional projects. What do you think about mobile photography and videography? How might this technology affect our overly-saturated market?
